Thank God that I grew up on the 60s and 70s music, and Cat is one of the best. but if his name now is Yusuf Islam, so be it. @ MuslimBass – Stevens himself does not deny these “accusations” how could he? He made them live on British TV – something I personally witnessed. The writer Faye Weldon, who was on the same TV programme, demanded his arrest. Stevens – claims now, his calling for Rushdie’s murder was only the over enthusiasm of a new convert ( or some such ). And well he would, as the calls for his arrest were mounting – but he has yet to come out and condemn absolutely murder for voicing opposition to Islam.

@TalismanTImes The problem with Cat Stevens is he is the problem. He called for the murder of Salman Rushdie, as ordered by the then Iranian Islamic dictator – so I mean, if Fred West sang a sweet folk song, would you use the same argument? Okay so Fred raped and murdered 17 young women – but listen to his music. Music, even great music, and certainly not Islam’s trite pop ditties is nothing set against freedom of speech and the right not to be murdered for applying it.
@Gozzillacia he stated later on the he didn’t encourage anyone to murder because the Qur’an says you should, but rather that it is simply a capital punishment to defame the prophet and that he supported their decision.
